Nanjing is a large international commercial center in the Changjian River Delta Area, second only to Shanghai.
The total sales value of consumer-goods in 1995 was more than 2.40 billion yuan, an increase of 27% over the previous year, and
was ranked one of the Ten Biggest Cities on this aspect. The large producer goods market for chemicals, building materials,
automobiles, mechanical & electronical equipments and so forth is full of vigor, with a sales value of over ten billion yuan,
making it an imortant distrbuting center for producer goods as well as a trade center in the Eastern China.
In 1995 there were 1397 financial institutions in the City, of which 305 being non-banking ones of insurance, trust, securities, and credit cooperatives.
All major banks in the country have their established branches in Nanjing. The Standard Chartered Bank from England and the Sumitomo Bank from Japan
also have their established institutions in the City.
In 1995 the deposits surplus of all the financial institutions in the City totalled 65.8 billion yuan, while the loan surplus 46.48 billion yuan. The
stock market has been connected to those in Shanghai and Shenzhen.
